What do we do with a word like God?

Can we define God?

There are people that have tried. There are people that will try to convince you their image of God is authoritative, their God is the only true God. They might use sacred texts and emotional arguments. They might appeal to scientific mysteries or ancient prophecies. They might use fear and shame to convince you, or rewards to win you.

This site is not about defining God or convincing you there is such a thing. But it can help with understanding that all we might ever know is our own ideas of God. And in doing so, we can explore how we think. We can explore how we can become more conscious of the world around us.

Can we know God?

There are people that have tried. There are people that use God in order to fulfill some personal need or personal wish. There are people that use God to justify how they see the world, or how they wish to see the world. There are people that use their concept of God to gain certainty and meaning in life.

This website is not about knowing God. But it can help in seeing the world as it is. And in doing so, we can explore the value of doubt. We can explore the value of thinking clearly without presumed conclusions. And we can even play with our ideas and laugh together. We might even find meaning in the world around us.

Can we influence or control God?

There are people that have tried. There are people that have convinced themselves they are on God's side. There are people that think God will intervene in their lives if they ask God in the right way for help. There are people that believe they can predict God's intentions by deciphering codes in God's messages. There are people that wish for eternal life and so behave according to what they think their God wants from them.

This site is not about influencing God. At best, we can only influence or control a concept we have made.  The concept of God may not point to anything that exists, may not be what we expect, or may not be what we want.

Just as a human will be human,
an idea will be an idea,
a metaphor will be a metaphor,
a word will be a word,
god will be god.

However, if that word does does point, what it does give us is a direction with which we can adjust our course. And we can do great things for the world and for others because of that direction.

But we are the ones responsible for that direction, and for our course of action.

We use god when attempting to interpret what is beyond our understanding. We use god when trying to control what is beyond our grasp. But if we learn from the world around us, we can share in the wonders it has to give. It makes much more sense to respect the world, and take lessons from the world, than it does to influence some absolute god.

Are we willing to let go of god, to say god will be god?

It can be scary thing, to see what our personal conceptions of god are made of. But it can be a courageous thing too. And it can be fun.

Are you willing to look at how you think about things like god? You might even amaze yourself with what is.
